Our fire radio case & strap system for the Harris XG-75P is a tried and true carry solution for firefighters worldwide. Also known as a radio bucket or FDNY radio strap, this system provides the user with superior radio retention and performance during interior fire operations as well as many other IDLH environments. With heavy duty stitching and rivets at all strain points, this case is designed to hold up to many years of hard use and is covered by a lifetime warranty. Beyond the safety and performance virtues, the things look cool. And let's be honest, is it worth doing anything if we don't look good doing it? That being said, we can customize and personalize each case and strap with a selection of emblems as well as alpha-numeric characters in a variety of colors. Because vanity!
Some of the benefits of using this carry solution vs. the radio pocket on turnouts include...
Radio Retention:
The case and strap combo do a better job of retaining the radio than the radio pockets on turnouts. When the radio is worn in a chest pocket, there is a substantial risk of the radio being damaged or ejected and lost during falls from heights and during roof or floor collapse. The hard leather radio case protects the radio and the firefighting straps keep the radio securely attached to the wearer at multiple points, substantially reducing the risk of becoming separated from the radio. And if there's any one piece of gear you might want after taking a nasty fall or going for a roof/floor ride, your radio just might be it!
Mic Cable Protection:
A remote speaker mic or RSM's weak link is the cable. When the radio is worn in a chest pocket, the RSM's cable is exposed to thermal and cutting hazards. When a RSM's cable is compromised, a condition known as "open mic" can occur which causes the radio to continuously transmit, tying up whatever channel it is on and complicating on scene communications. When in a radio case and strap, the mic's cable is worn under the coat and comes out the neck of the jacket, protecting the cable from being melted, snagged or cut.
Radio Control Access:
Having the radio at the hip and towards the back allows for unobstructed access to the radios control knobs and buttons, including the red button, even left handed! Radios worn in a chest pocket often need to be removed to work the controls, sometimes requiring both hands.
Radio Performance:
The location and orientation of the radio are an important factor in transmit range. For peak performance the radios antenna should be oriented vertically and unobstructed. When crawling, radios worn in chest pockets have the antenna oriented horizontally and the body of the user absorbs or blocks a substantial amount of the transmitted signal (Yes, you're that dense!). With the case and strap worn on the hip, the radio is oriented closer to vertical with the antenna more clear of the body which amounts to less signal loss.
To summarize, by using a firefighter radio strap you have less chance of ejecting the radio, melting your mic cord, you can more easily work the radio controls AND the radio will have better TX/RX performance. Think it's all marketing spiel? Well, think again! This system has been in use for many years and has been scientifically tested as well as mandated for use by many Fire Departments the world over.
